Digital transformation has become a new driver of productivity in the post-pandemic era. As the digital economy grows, the more urgent it is for businesses to compute and process massive amounts of data. Tencent Cloud was the first to recognize edge cloud as the solution for high connectivity, low latency, and large bandwidth to help businesses accelerate digital transformation.

As we celebrate the first anniversary of Tencent Cloud EdgeOne (hereafter referred to as EdgeOne), the company's one-stop edge cloud security and acceleration platform, we invite Tommy Li, Vice President of Tencent Cloud to shed light on the importance of edge cloud in the digital economy and how EdgeOne helps businesses improve their efficiency and development while focusing solely on their business. “We are glad to celebrate the achievements of EdgeOne in its first anniversary,” said Li. “By making its affordable product services more readily available to businesses of all sizes, we aim to continue providing a great solution for businesses to improve their efficiency and development.”

EdgeOne: A One-Stop Solution for Improved Efficiency and Quality of Service

Launched on July 29, 2022, EdgeOne is the first truly one-stop edge cloud security and acceleration product in mainland China. “It adopts the world's most advanced product technology architecture while introducing the concept of a service chain to achieve plug-and-play service embedding,” Li explained.

EdgeOne caters to customers with security and content delivery needs such as SMEs and developers with demands for website acceleration protection, gaming support, and audio and video experience. It also provides CDN acceleration and high traffic DDoS protection, and the upstream and downstream products include CVM, public IP, cloud disk, COS, and CDN. “Simply put, the next-generation CDN solves the pain points of traditional CDN configuration security schemes and achieves security and acceleration ‘All in One’,” Li added.

“Within a year, we have witnessed EdgeOne become more mature and stable, offering benefits such as beginner-friendly features, efficient operation and maintenance, flexible configurations, and fearless protection against attacks,” Li remarked, emphasizing how the developments really make it the premier choice for businesses with cloud needs.

“Although EdgeOne was launched as a product last year, we actually spent three years refining it,” Li said, detailing how Tencent Cloud spent two years on the underlying transformation and groundwork, and one year serving the market. “As a To-B product, we often visit users, and in this process, we discovered a common phenomenon: many users need matching high-quality service performance when facing rapid business growth. This means that they can only choose complex combination solutions among cloud vendors after considering the cost.”

According to Li, the initial purpose of creating EdgeOne was to develop a highly cost-effective product that can provide a one-stop service for business improvement and efficiency, allowing enterprises to focus on their own business development without worrying about anything beyond their business.

Leading product capabilities, stable and easy-to-use product services

EdgeOne currently has a comprehensive product matrix, providing users with domain name resolution, dynamic and static intelligent acceleration, TCP/UDP layer 4 acceleration, DDoS/CC/Web/Bot protection, edge function computing, and other one-stop edge services.

“With over 2,800 global acceleration nodes across more than 70 countries and regions and the ability to stably mitigate attack traffic up to 1.1 Tbps, we can assure EdgeOne users with the ultimate acceleration performance experience,” Li said. He added that EdgeOne's simple and easy-to-use interactive interface can help businesses reduce 75% of their operational workload.

Furthermore, EdgeOne has a global joint defence capability of 10Tbps+ for DDoS protection, identifying and mitigating most DDoS attacks within an average of 3 seconds, with a cleaning success rate of over 99.995%.

As a testament to EdgeOne’s power, Li said that it can solve “99% + 1%” of problems. “EdgeOne’s product matrix meets 99% of users’ routine business needs. For the remaining 1%, EdgeOne provides a sophisticated expert team. Tencent Cloud has gathered senior experts from multiple teams, such as CDN/Anti-DDoS/Web Protection/CC Protection/Bot Management, into one team,” Li elaborated. This way, when special situations arise, EdgeOne can conduct a thorough analysis of user needs, combine the most advanced technology in the industry, and plan high scalability demand solutions that deliver product functionality that meets user business requirements.

Helping businesses achieve excellent results, trusted by customers

“The best testament to EdgeOne’s high quality is the fact that it is well received by various industries,” according to Li. In the first half of 2023, EdgeOne provided stable services to various industry customers worldwide, including global gaming projects, popular audio and video applications, excellent cross-border e-commerce platforms, and leading financial institutions. It improved global acceleration performance by 60% for an audio and video customer and improved business access performance by three times for a financial customer.

Li listed some of the clients who have achieved their cloud goals and addressed their demands, which include:

Honor of Kings - Tencent Cloud EdgeOne has empowered Honor of Kings (HOK) – the world’s first game with 100 million average daily active users– to provide global players with a stable and smooth entertainment experience that combines performance and security protection. In 2023, HOK has been officially launched in Brazil. Through EdgeOne, the game successfully replicated its globally renowned exquisite and delicate art visuals, localized hero designs, rich gameplay, and stable and smooth entertainment experience in the Brazilian market’s large population, gaining favor and praise from numerous Brazilian players. To address challenges in covering HOK gamers’ demands and needs, EdgeOne has utilized its abundant overseas node resources, offering sufficient bandwidth guarantees for the initial download of HOK, ensuring that all players can download faster from the first moment. Furthermore, it has extended its defense boundary to the closest proximity to attackers, and implemented a multi-layer defense system, covering DDoS/CC/WAF/Bot attacks and forming an integrated security and acceleration protection matrix to safeguard business releases.

GeeTest – a leading enterprise service provider that utilizes AI technology to solve network security problems, mainly offering security SaaS services in the captcha market to help enterprises identify abnormal machine traffic on their websites. Geetest has been deeply involved in the security SaaS service field for a long time, and has gradually entered the global market with its innovative "Behavioral Verification" technology. With the expansion of its business scope, Geetest needs to quickly adapt to the network environment and unfamiliar technology platform service markets of different countries overseas – which are areas boosted by its collaboration with Tencent Cloud. Tencent Cloud's EdgeOne product simplifies their architecture complexity by combining DDoS defense, WAF, and dynamic acceleration, providing a good user experience. EdgeOne offers powerful edge computing capabilities, reliable edge architecture, and seamless integration with Tencent Cloud's ecosystem, helping developers build efficient, reliable, and secure edge applications.

With the help of EdgeOne, Geetest has successfully withstood multiple high traffic peaks, and had its overall dynamic acceleration performance increase by 25%, significantly improving the user experience. GeeTest also covers the top enterprises in 20 different industries, provides over 2.9 billion daily security protections, and has partnered with 360,000 companies worldwide.

“While we enjoy all the fruits of our labor within EdgeOne’s first year, we have also encountered many challenges and doubts. In fact, launching EdgeOne is not a simple matter. It requires intensive commitment from our manpower and resources, whether it is integrating underlying resources or integrating product teams,” Li emphasized. “As mentioned earlier, we spent three years solidly refining this product based on our insights into the market. We also hope that the market can see the sincerity of the EdgeOne team: this is not a whim of Tencent Cloud, but a solidly refined product based on our insights into the market over three years.”

“Today, it is widely considered as a timely addition to Tencent Cloud’s roster of innovative products and services, as proven by its international recognition,” Li said. EdgeOne has gained recognition from reputable international research and advisory firms Gartner and Omdia, as well as the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT), as a leading-edge cloud platform. It was selected for the Gartner DDoS Mitigation Solution Market Guide, and has ranked first in the DDoS market share in the Asia-Pacific region according to the Omdia "DDoS Prevention Technology Market Tracker – 1Q22–3Q22 Analysis" report - solidifying its status as an essential digitalization tool for businesses of all sizes across industries. Furthermore, It has also been selected as a pioneer case of edge computing by CAICT being the only vendor in China whose edge security and acceleration capabilities meet all its requirements.

"In the future, it will officially open its product services to small and medium-sized enterprises and developers,” Li said about the plans for EdgeOne beyond its first year. “We aim to make our more advanced technology architecture, comprehensive product matrix, and superior performance within reach for all businesses,” Li added, while putting emphasis on EdgeOne being a successful practice of combining edge computing and security.

In conclusion, Li forecast that Tencent Cloud will continue to explore more capabilities on the edge side and create more possibilities for "All in One" solutions. “EdgeOne will continue being a trusted solution for businesses across various industries, and we are committed for it to further innovate and improve to support our customers' digital transformation journey."
