A New World Record Breaker: Tencent Cloud Database TDSQL Processes 814 Million Transactions per Minute

TDSQL Processes 814 Million Transactions per Minute, Breaking World Records in an 8-Hour Full Stress Test

On March 30, 2023, Transaction Processing Performance Council (TPC), an authoritative evaluation agency in the database field, announced that Tencent Cloud Database (TDSQL) successfully passed the TPC-C benchmark test, processing 814 million transactions per minute (tpmC) and breaking the world record. This demonstrates that TDSQL has become the leading player in the industry with its distributed and scalable architecture.

TPC-C test results by performance

Known as the “Olympics” in the database industry, the TPC-C test is a globally recognised performance benchmark for database systems. It simulates complex transactions with high concurrency where hundreds of millions of users place orders at the same time. This evaluates the database management system's performance under extreme heavy loading pressure.

Tencent Cloud's participation in the test was not only a verification of its technical capabilities but also an attempt to break through its database performance limit under extreme circumstances. TPC-C has a set of strict audit procedures and standards to ensure that the transaction processing capabilities of the tested databases are fully verified, where the testing process is transparent and the results are reproducible.

Tencent's Vice President, Jie Jiang, said in an interview: "We believe that the development of database requires not only long-term investment but also looking beyond our own borders. TPC-C was bound to happen once we reached a certain level. Tencent Cloud's database has already made solid achievement in many applications. Accepting the challenge to build a larger distributed cluster allows Tencent to not only identify and overcome ahead of time technical difficulties it may encounter in the future but also prove its product's capabilities."

In order to pass the stress test of TPC-C, the TDSQL team had to maximize the performance of a single server and leverage the strengths of distributed databases to horizontally scale high numbers of servers. As required by the test audit, the team must ensure that the ultra large cluster built for the test could stay stable for at least 8 hours.

TDSQL achieved an excellent result by sustaining 1.8 million queries per second (QPS) per node through continuous optimization of memory management. Thanks to its in-depth optimization of the lock mechanism, it ensured that the database system could be fully parallelized to break through possible performance bottlenecks. Besides, based on its high-availability solution empowered by multiple types of nodes, it struck a balance between disk usage and high availability under the prolonged stress of ultra high concurrency, where the leader-replica delay was kept within 10 seconds.

The test result shows that TDSQL had successfully sustained 814 million tpmC at only one-third of the industry average unit cost. During the test, TDSQL ran the mega cluster stably for 8 continuous hours without jitters, processing over 860 billion transactions and 4 trillion order details without inconsistencies.

Under the 814 million tpmC pressure, the auditors also performed two random physical power outages and one Tencent Cloud simulated instance failure on TDSQL. TDSQL swiftly completed the master-standby switchover in 18 seconds, ensuring overall stability and zero data loss. The performance variation remains below 0.2%, far lower than the TPC-C audit requirement.

TDSQL stayed stable with a fluctuation rate below 0.2% during the 8-hour continuous stress test

According to a 2022 Gartner report, Tencent Cloud’s database ranked first among Chinese vendors in terms of online transactional processing (OLTP) and lightweight transaction use cases. TDSQL serves seven of the top ten banks and more than 20 financial institutions in China. Tencent Cloud’s database offers a wide variety of multi-engine integrated database solutions covering finance-level distributed, cloud-native, and analytical databases. Such solutions boost industry-leading high availability, storage-computing separation, and enterprise-grade security capabilities, trusted by more than 500,000 customers in diverse industries.

In addition to database, Tencent Cloud has also built a complete ecosystem of proprietary products in underlying core fields like server, operating system, cloud base, and big data. Its full stack of software-hardware integration helps players in the real economy benefit from cloud computing with ease.
